This is for more than compliance. Jessica Oddi made this website with the belief that Access is Love (a project by Alice Wong, Mia Mingus, and Sandy Ho).

Development

Jess created this WordPress website with Elementor Pro. She met Level AA and some AAA standards as outlined by WCAG 2.2 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). Workarounds were made to combat issues within Elementor at the time of development.

Community practices included:

  • Relative font sizes for your device’s base
  • Ample padding for clickable areas
  • Shorter alt text accompanied with image descriptions
  • Level AAA color contrast as the minimum standard for text
  • High contrast mode compatible images and interactive states
  • Sticky side navigation on desktop for recipes and events

UX Notes

Zoom: Screen widths below 767px will trigger a single column layout. It will also apply with a desktop browser zoom over 175%. This may give a better experience for those with magnifying software.

Embeds: External video embeds and Cloudflare Turnstile use an iframe container. Uneditable to combat errors flagged by ARC toolkit. Applicable to Recipe areas and Event Description sections with external video links. As well as leaving a comment on recipe posts.

Comments: Form submissions for comments on Recipe posts use the WordPress default set up. Some styles and notices have been changed. The experience may differ on various assistive technologies.

Testing Methods

This website was tested with automated and manual methods. WAVE and ARC tools showed 0 errors. Exception: iframe video embed testing produced 4 errors with ARC Toolkit.

Jess reviewed in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Duck Duck Go (mobile). She used an iMac, Windows Surface Studio 2, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, legacy iPhone and iPad. Manual tests included:

  • VoiceOver, TalkBack, and NVDA (with Assistiv Labs simulation)
  • Keyboard-only, Voice Control, and Voice Access, navigation
  • Windows high contrast mode
  • Browser zoom 200%
